Average and Edge Stresses for Flat Plates Under Shear and Compression

ESDU Struct 02.04.02 applies to an elastic plate loaded longitudinally in uniaxial compression combined with shear and having simply-supported edges. The plate is assumed to have an aspect ratio of 3 or more. A graph plots the average stress in the plate against the stress in the sides in the direction of the compression for various values of the plate shear stress. All stresses are non-dimensionalised by the compressive stress that would buckle the plate when applied on its own; to use the data requires a value for that buckling stress which may be obtained from ESDU 72019. It is assumed that the edges of the plate remain straight and that the longitudinal edges are held a fixed distance apart after buckling. Direct loads, proportional to the edge stresses, may be carried by longitudinal members. A worked example illustrates the use of the curves.
