It is intended to document the common<br \/>\nconventions required for the interchange of clinical results and<br \/>\npatient data between clinical laboratory instruments and<br \/>\ninformation systems. This standard specifies the message content<br \/>\nfor transferring information between a clinical laboratory<br \/>\ninstrument and an information system. It enables any two such<br \/>\nsystems to establish a logical link for communicating text to send<br \/>\nresult, request, or demographic information in a standardized and<br \/>\ninterpretable form. This standard does not necessarily apply to<br \/>\ngeneral analytical instruments in an industrial analytical setting,<br \/>\nor to a research and development setting.<\/p>\n<p>This standard is intended to apply to the structure of messages<br \/>\nexchanged between clinical laboratory instruments and information<br \/>\nsystems by means of defined communications protocols. Low-level<br \/>\ncommunications protocols and data transfer requirements are beyond<br \/>\nthe scope of this standard. A separate specification is available<br \/>\ndetailing a standard for low-level data transfer communications<br \/>\n(see NCCLS document LIS1\u2014<em>Standard Specification for Low-Level<br \/>\nProtocol to Transfer Messages Between Clinical Laboratory<br \/>\nInstruments and Computer Systems).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This standard specifies the conventions for structuring the<br \/>\ncontent of the message and for representing the data elements<br \/>\ncontained within those structures. It is applicable to all<br \/>\ntext-oriented clinical instrumentation. It has been specifically<br \/>\ncreated to provide common conventions for interfacing computers and<br \/>\ninstruments in a clinical setting. It would also be applicable to<br \/>\ninterfacing instruments in clinical practice settings, such as<br \/>\nphysicians&#039; offices, clinics, and satellite laboratories.
