This report is an aggregate of data submitted to the American Petroleum Institute (API) by 140 oil and gas companies (including 12 subsidiaries), employing 228,209 persons with a total work experience of 463 million hours during 1996. In 1995,172 companies reported 261 , 183 employees with a work experience of 535 million hours. Individual company participation varies from year to year, yet 90 companies, representing 97 percent of the number of employees and 96 percent of the number of hours worked in 1996 had responded to this survey for the past 2 years.
