Provides a method for the quantitative evaluation of small colour difference between paint films.

Scope

This Standard sets out the method for the quantitative evaluation of small colour differences between paint films.
NOTES:
1 There are numerous formulae for calculating a colour difference from the colour coordinates of two specimens. For various reasons the results given by such formulae, including the one defined here, do not in all cases agree satisfactorily with visual perception, nor are they likely to agree with each other. In 1976, the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) recommended two formulae for general use. One of these, the CIE (L*a*b*) colour difference formula, has proved to be of practical value for the colorimetric evaluation of paint films and a detailed description may be obtained from CIE Publication No. 15.2.
2 This method of evaluating colour difference should not be confused with the Hunter Lab system.
