Originally published in 1989, Standard 49.1 provides recommended practices for measuring the mass flow rate of volatile refrigerants using calorimeters and applies to all refrigerants listed in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34. This most recent revision of Standard 49.1 includes updated references and citations, procedural revisions, and additional updates that bring the standard into compliance with ASHRAE’s mandatory language requirement. Additional minor changes improve usability and readability.

1 ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 41.9-2011
4 FOREWORD
1. PURPOSE
2. SCOPE
2.1 This standard applies to the measurement of the flow of a volatile refrigerant in the following cases:
2.2 This standard applies to all of the refrigerants listed in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34, Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants.1
3. DEFINITIONS
5 4. CLASSIFICATIONS
4.1 Calorimeters. Calorimeters that are within the scope of this standard are classified either as evaporator calorimeters or as condenser calorimeters.
4.2 Refrigerant Blends. Volatile refrigerant blends can be classified as being azeotropic or zeotropic. For zeotropic refrigerants, the temperature glide shall be accounted for in all determinations of liquid subcooling and vapor superheat. Zeotropic…
5. REQUIREMENTS
5.1 Values to be Determined
5.2 Test Requirements
6 Figure 1 Pressure-enthalpy diagram.
5.3 Safety Requirements. All calorimeters shall meet design requirements for safety as defined in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems.5 Some specific additional safety precautions are included in later sections of this …
6. INSTRUMENTS
6.1 General
6.2 Temperature Measurements. Temperature measurement errors shall be within the following limits:
6.3 Pressure Measurements. Pressure measurement errors shall be less than ±1.0%. If absolute pressure sensors are not used, ensure that the pressure measurement uncertainty calculations include the barometric pressure correction in order to obtain a…
6.4 Electrical Measurements. Electrical power measurement errors shall be within ±1.0% of the quantity measured. Electrical power measurements shall be made at such a location that the instrumentation can accurately measure the power input.
6.5 Water or Brine Flow Measurements. Water or brine flow rates shall be measured within ±1.0% of the quantity measured.
6.6 Time Measurements. Time measurements shall be within ±0.5% of the elapsed time measured. This accuracy shall include any uncertainty errors associated with starting and stopping the measurement.
6.7 Weight Measurements. Weight measurements shall be within ±0.2% of the weight measured.
