ASME A17.5 applies to the electrical equipment for elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, material lifts, and elevating devices for persons with physical disabilities (platform lifts and stairway chairlifts): • motor controllers; • motion controllers; • operation controllers; • operating devices; and • all other electrical equipment not listed/certified and labeled/marked according to another product safety standard or code. The equipment specified in this Safety Standard is intended for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 (CSA C22.1) and the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), whichever is applicable. Note: Controllers, i.e. motion, motor and operation controllers, are defined in CSA B44 and ASME A17.1. ASME has been defining safety in elevators, escalators and related equipment since 1921. ASME A17.5 is harmonized with CSA B44.1 to provide one comprehensive solution for jurisdictions throughout North America. This Safety Standard is to be used in conjunction with other volumes of ASME’s A17 series of safety standards. Careful application of these A17 safety standards will help users to comply with applicable regulations within their jurisdictions, while achieving the operational and safety benefits to be gained from the many industry best-practices detailed within these volumes. Intended for anyone involved with the safety of elevators, escalators and related conveyances.
