Endotoxins are potentially regarded as a further key parameter or indicator for the assessment of plant-related exposure by bioaerosols. Endotoxins may be a well-suited parameter to derive a limit value. The Health Council of the Netherlands, for example, has derived a health-based limit value for the general population of 30 EU(endotoxin units)/m3. Endotoxins are also measured in many studies on bioaerosols. However, the results are difficult to compare, as the measurement in environmental samples is not yet standardised and is often not specified exactly how the sampling and analysis was carried out in detail. With regard to the evaluation, fungi and bacteria are "difficult" parameters for the derivation of a limit value; endotoxins may be more suitable here. The standard focuses on the standardization of the emission measurement of endotoxins. It describes how sampling (testing of VDI 4257 Part 2 – method for suitability for endotoxins)and the analysis are performed.
