ESDU 77018 gives data for the analysis of a panel (that is, a thin plate reinforced by orthogonal edge stiffeners). Data, based largely on a correlation of experimental results relating to panels whose length in the longitudinal direction is at least twice that in the circumferential direction, enable the following to be determined: the proportion of the total shear reacted by the diagonal tension and the angle of the tension, the uniform compressive stress in the stiffeners, the inward radial load on the stiffeners due to the flattening of the plate under the diagonal tension, and the maximum tensile stress in the plate.
