The very high frequency (VHF) digital link (VDL) communications system is one of a number of aircraft-to-ground subnetworks that may be used to support data communications across the aeronautical telecommunication network (ATN) between aircraft-based application processes and their ground-based peer processes. the data communications functions, in turn, are supported by the digital communication protocols employed by the VHF data transceiver and supporting avionics of the VDL System.

This document contains the detailed technical specification for VDL Mode 2. These specifications need to be considered in conjunction with the Standards and Recommended Practices for VDL Mode 2. This document also includes the guidance in the implementation of VDL Mode 2. VDL Mode 2 provides an air/ground data link which is compatible with the aeronautical telecommunication network (ATN).
