La présente Norme internationale prescrit une méthode pour le dosage du fer(II) dans les minerais de fer naturels ou traités renfermant de 1 % à 25 % de fer(II) soluble dans l'acide et seulement des traces de fer métallique. Cette méthode est limitée spécifiquement pour l'emploi en liaison avec les méthodes d'essai de réductibilité spécifiées dans l'ISO 4695 ou l'ISO 7215. Cette méthode n'est pas applicable à des minerais renfermant plus de 0,3 % (m/m) de souffre (sous forme de sulfure) et/ou 5 % (m/m) de carbone libre. Des essais ont montré que le résidu insoluble dans l'acide peut être négligé, en particulier en ce qui concerne les besoins des méthodes d'essai de réductibilité impliquées et la précision que cette méthode permet d'obtenir.
