Metallic materials – Sheet and strip – Determination of tensile strain
hardening exponent

This Standard specifies a method for determining the tensile strain hardening exponent (hereafter referred to as n value) of the sheet and strip made of metallic materials.
The method is valid only for that part of the stress-strain curve in the plastic range where the curve is continuous and monotonic (see 8.3).
In the case of materials with a serrated stress-strain curve in the work hardening range (materials which show the Portevin — Le Chatelier effect, e.g. aluminium-magnesium alloys), the automatic determination (linear regression of the logarithm true stress vs. the logarithm true plastic strain, see 8.5) may be used to give reproducible results.
NOTE 1 In this Standard, the value of plastic strain is supposed to be used for the value of strain used for the calculation of the tensile strain hardening exponent. However, when the elastic strain is under 10 % of the total strain used for the calculation, the total strain may be used in place of the plastic strain.
NOTE 2 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.
ISO 10275 : 2007 Metallic materials — Sheet and strip — Determination of tensile strain hardening exponent (MOD)
In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21-1.
