To enable people to perform visual tasks efficiently and accurately, especially during the night, adequate and appropriate lighting has to be provided.
The degree of visibility and comfort required in a wide range of outdoor work places is governed by the type and duration of activity.
This Standard specifies the lighting requirements related to the amount and quality of lighting which will contribute to the visual needs for safety, easiness, efficiency and comfort for performing tasks within outdoor work places or other areas related thereto.
This Standard does not provide explanation on how the lighting systems should be designed to a resolve a specific problem, nor does it restrict the freedom of designers to adopt a new technology, or use of new equipment or device.
NOTE 1 For methods of designing the lighting systems and technologies to optimize a specific visual environment, related Guides and Reports of the International Commission on Illumination (Commision Internationale de lEclairage, hereafter referred to as CIE) and standards issued by the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan should be referred to.
