Put safety first! Manufacture, transport, and store fireworks according to the latest requirements in the 2013 NFPA 1124. Used by pyrotechnics device manufacturers (display, consumer, or proximate audience devices), retail venue operators, enforcers (AHJ), and insurance professionals, NFPA 1124 establishes fire and life safety requirements for the manufacture, transportation, and storage of fireworks, pyrotechnic articles, and any components containing pyrotechnic or explosive compositions. It also covers the distribution and retail sales of fireworks, but does not apply to the use of consumer fireworks by the general public. Revisions to NFPA 1124 ensure that the fire and life safety provisions are the broadest and most comprehensive when applied to the operations or processes covered within the scope of the Code. Among the major changes in the 2013 edition that improve safety are: Chapter 7: Retail Sales of Consumer Fireworks contains changes developed using a more technically based set of requirements related to issues such as threshold quantities of pyrotechnic composition within venues covered by the Code and threshold facility sizes for requiring automatic sprinkler protection. Improved requirements related to protective features associated with the fireworks devices (covered fuses) and the retail facility display shelving (flame breaks) that are intended to inhibit ignition of the fireworks device in a retail venue and limit the growth or spread of any resulting fire obtained through application of the new fire test standards, NFPA 1128 and NFPA 1129. In addition, editorial clarifications have been made to make requirements easier to interpret and enforce and definitions have been revised to improve consistency within NFPA® documents.
