Promote the health and safety of fire department members on the job with NFPA 1582!
Consistent with current medical research and knowledge, the 2007 NFPA 1582 presents updated provisions for a comprehensive occupational medical program. The Standard provides requirements for the medical evaluation of candidates and occupational medical and fitness evaluations for incumbent fire fighters. Requirements are equated against the essential job tasks based on several NFPA Professional Qualification Standards.
Significant changes in the 2007 edition include:
- Important revisions to the chapters on the medical evaluation of incumbent fire fighters with certain medical conditions. Requirements focus more specifically on each individual’s ability to perform defined essential job tasks.
- Updated provisions concerning medical conditions that govern a candidate’s eligibility to become a fire fighter
- New provisions allowing persons with diabetes to enter the fire service or continue performing essential job tasks, provided they meet defined criteria
