Be confident in emergency vehicle performance and reliability with the 2017 edition of NFPA 1911. Conduct timely inspection, maintenance, and in-service testing of emergency vehicles to ensure prompt, reliable response and protect personnel on board. Apply the new NFPA 1911: Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles when developing a program for vehicle care. Renamed for the 2017 edition, NFPA 1911 is updated and revised with a broader scope. The term “fire apparatus” is replaced with “emergency vehicle” throughout the document to make requirements more inclusive and applicable to more than just fire apparatus. Other revisions include: A new chapter for the patient compartment of ambulances, for application alongside NFPA 1917: Standard for Automotive Ambulances A new chapter with requirements for trailers Changes that make the Standard consistent with NFPA 1901: Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus and NFPA 1906: Standard for Wildland Fire Apparatus New requirements for ultra-high-pressure pumps (UHPs) Explanatory information stating that NFPA 1911 requirements can apply to vehicles with a GVWR less than 5001 lb, if the AHJ so chooses Revisions in the chapter addressing daily/weekly checks, to ensure code and standard consistency as well as address currently accepted practices Changes to the tire load and speed rating of tires used on emergency vehicles to ensure the correct tires are being used based on application New requirements that wildland fire pumps and UHPs testing be done at least annually and when any listed repair is performed Staying up-to-code with NFPA 1911 is essential for mechanics, maintenance shop supervisors, and testing company personnel — anyone responsible for inspecting, servicing, or testing emergency vehicles
