1.1 Scope

1.1.1 This document applies to cartridge, leaded and surface mount low-voltage, lightning surge withstand overcurrent protectors used in central office, outside plant, remote site and customer premises telecommunications equipment.

1.1.2 These protectors, such as fuses, line feed resistors, electronic current limiters and positive temperature coefficient thermistors, are intended for use in circuits to be electrically connected to a telecommunication network that has an operating voltage to ground of not greater than 150 Vac, and an operating dc voltage to ground of not greater than 200 Vdc (400 Vdc between conductors).

1.1.3 All protectors complying with the requirements of this standard are capable of safely clearing externally sourced faults up to 600 Vrms, with prospective limited duration source currents of up to 60 Arms. Ratings applicable to a specific protector are provided in the applicable Template, see Normative Annex a.

1.1.4 Protectors complying with the requirements of this standard are capable of withstanding common-mode lightning surges as defined in the related tables in this standard without causing permanent opening or shorting of the device and without sustaining damage that will affect compliance with the appropriate end-product requirements. In addition, protectors complying with the requirements of this standard are capable of withstanding higher level lightning surges defined in the end product requirements specified for a particular design template.

1.1.5 This document only covers protectors to be employed with wire line paired cable telecommunications ports (including Ethernet), but does not cover protectors used for other ports, such as coaxial cable telecommunications ports or AC power ports.

1.1.6 A template defines the maximum current-time curve that a given wire size can safely withstand without damage or degradation. (See Table 1) The protector must interrupt, limit or reduce the circuit current before the current value for a given time is exceeded when tested at the rated voltage.

1.1.7 These protectors shall not be employed in other than telecommunications circuits for which they have been specifically designed unless evaluated to another standard. Acceptable applications are summarized in Table 1.

1.1.8 Ambient chemical and environmental contamination conditions (e.g. salt spray, potentially explosive or corrosive gases, excessive mechanical shock and vibration) are beyond the scope of this standard.Table 1 – List of templates
