ISO/TS 19264-1:2017 describes a method for analysing imaging systems quality in the area of cultural heritage imaging. The method described analyses multiple imaging systems quality characteristics from a single image of a specified test target. The specification states which characteristics are measured, how they are measured, and how the results of the analysis need to be presented.

ISO/TS 19264-1:2017 applies to scanners and digital cameras used for digitization of cultural heritage material.

NOTE This document addresses imaging of reflective originals, a future part two will address imaging of transparent originals.

ISO/TR 19263-1:2017 specifies how to perform quality analysis of imaging systems (e.g. flatbed scanners, planetary scanners, or digital still cameras) used for digitization of reflective two-dimensional originals.

Original materials include but are not limited to books, textual documents, drawings, prints, photographs, and paintings. Certain types of two-dimensional materials with complex surface geometry and or highly reflective surface elements require special illumination techniques that can fall outside the scope of this document.

NOTE ISO/TS 19264-2 will address transmissive materials.

ISO 5-4:2009 specifies the geometric conditions for the definition of ISO 5 standard reflection density. It also recommends tolerances on geometric conditions that can be used in the design of instruments. The spectral conditions are specified in ISO 5-3.

ISO 5-4:2009 also specifies the requirements for polarization (if that feature is included) and for backing material, and makes recommendations regarding accuracy and linearity.

Although intended primarily for use in the measurement of the reflection characteristics of photographic and graphic arts materials, ISO 5-4:2009 is also applicable to the measurement of these characteristics for other materials.

ISO 5-2:2009 specifies the geometric conditions for measuring ISO 5 standard diffuse and ƒ/4,5 and ƒ/1,6 projection transmittance densities.

ISO 5 standard diffuse density is primarily applicable to measurements of photographic images to be viewed on a transparency illuminator, or viewing box, to be contact printed, or to be projected with a system employing diffuse illumination.

ISO 5 standard projection density is primarily applicable to measurements of photographic images to be projected with systems employing optical condensers.

Although primarily intended for the measurement of photographic images, the densitometric methods specified in ISO 5-2:2009 are often applied to optical filters and other transparent materials.

ISO 5-1:2009 establishes terms, symbols, functional notations and a coordinate system to describe geometric and spectral conditions for the measurement of the degree to which a specimen modulates radiant flux for applications in photography, graphic technology, and radiometry.

ISO 5-1:2009 primarily provides a system for describing methods of measuring or specifying the transmission and reflection properties of photographic and graphic arts materials. The geometric and spectral conditions associated with such measurement are specified in ISO 5-2, ISO 5-3 and ISO 5-4.

ISO 3664:2009 specifies viewing conditions for images on both reflective and transmissive media, such as prints (both photographic and photomechanical) and transparencies, as well as images displayed in isolation on colour monitors.

ISO 3664:2009 applies in particular to:

  • critical comparison between transparencies, reflection photographic or photomechanical prints and/or other objects or images;
  • appraisal of the tone reproduction and colourfulness of prints and transparencies at illumination levels similar to those for practical use, including routine inspection;
  • critical appraisal of transparencies that are viewed by projection, for comparison with prints, objects or other reproductions; and
  • appraisal of images on colour monitors that are not viewed in comparison to any form of hardcopy.

ISO 3664:2009 is not applicable to unprinted papers.

ISO 20462-1:2005 is part of a three-part standard pertaining to the subjective evaluation of pictorial still image quality. ISO 20462-1:2005 defines the units by which image quality is quantified (just noticeable differences, or JNDs); describes the influence of stimulus properties, observer characteristics, and task instructions on results obtained from rating experiments; and provides a flow chart for choosing the preferred psychophysical method for determining image quality from among those defined in subsequent parts of ISO 20462.
