This standard specifies the dimensions required for mechanical and optical interchangeability of lenses for 16-mm and 8-mm motion-picture cameras. For 16-mm cameras with threaded lens mounts, threads having a nominal major diameter of 1 in are often specified. Similarly, for 8-mm motion-picture cameras, threads having a nominal major diameter of 5/8 in are in common use. This standard does not apply to continuous-type motion-picture cameras because of the type of optical system employed in those cameras.

This standard specifies a mark and its location to indicate the film plane on 16- and 8-mm cameras having lenses which can be focused for various object distances.

(1.2) The standard is not intended to prescribe design except for the dimensions affecting inter-changeability; for this reason, the socket figures indicate two of many possible designs.

This standard specifies the dimensions of the camera aperture image and the relative positions of the vertical and horizontal centerlines of the intended image area with respect to the reference edge and the perforations of the camera negative film for 65-mm motion-picture cameras.

This standard specifies the screen luminance level, luminance distribution, and spectral distribution (color temperature) of the projection light for theatrical, review-room, and non-theatrical presentation of 16-, 35-, and 70-mm motion-picture prints intended for projection at 24 frames per second. It is the purpose of these specifications to achieve the tone scale, contrast, and pictorial quality of the projected print that will be of the quality intended during its production.

This standard specifies the dimensions of the 8-mm type S motion-picture film camera cartridge and cartridge-camera interface. Also specified are the dimensions of the take-up core drive opening and critical dimensions of the take-up core as well as the driving force, direction of drive, and recommended drive ratio.

This standard specifies the cutting and perforating dimensions for 16-mm motion-picture film with perforations along one or both edges and a perforation pitch of either 0.2994 in or 0.3000 in (7.605 mm or 7.620 mm) for the following two categories: (a) 16-mm motion-picture films; (b) manufacturer-designated 16-mm professional motion-picture camera films with tighter tolerances.
