This SAE Standard is applicable for determining the wicking characteristics of seat fabrics, convertible tops, headlining, fiber padding, and other automotive textile materials.

This test method can be used to determine the dimensional stability of textile materials and vinyl-coated fabrics when subjected to conditions which cause changes in the moisture content of the materials.

This test is designed to measure the thickness of textiles, plastics, and similar materials.

This test can be used to determine the resistance to crocking (color rub-off) of organic trim materials such as fabrics, vinyl coated fabrics, leather, coated fiberboard and carpet.

This method is similar to AATCC Method 8 –Colorfastness to Crocking.

This method of test applies to the measurement of elastic and recovery properties of materials after being subjected to a low-static load.

This SAE Recommended Practice is applicable for determining the cold characteristics of flexible plastic materials, as applicable. It consists of three different methods for determining low-temperature properties of materials depending on type of material and end use. The method used shall be as specified by the contractual parties.

This SAE Standard identifies chemical/mechanical properties, thickness, width, mass, and other requirements recommended for felts (refer to Tables 1 and 2). It was developed with the cooperation of the Standardization Committee of the Felt Association, Inc., and in accordance with the ASTM tests indicated in the document.

The commercial trade designations of the more commonly used grades of automotive felts are given along with complete specifications and tolerances for thickness, mass, wool content, chemical and physical requirements, color, and width.

General information, recommended uses, etc., are published in Appendix A as a guide in the selection of felts for particular uses, but the requirements for each application should be taken into consideration in making final selections.

This SAE Standard provides a system for specifying significant material properties of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) that are intended for, but not limited to, use in automotive applications.

NOTE 1—For the purposes of this document a TPE is defined as a polymeric material that, without further chemical modifications, is capable of recovering from deformations quickly and forcibly and is also capable of being repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling within a temperature range characteristic of the material.

NOTE 2—When the TPE product is to be used for purposes where the requirements are too specific to be completely prescribed by this classification system, it is necessary for the purchaser to consult the supplier in advance to establish the appropriate properties, test methods, and specification test limits.

In all cases where provisions of this classification system would conflict with those of the detailed specifications for a particular product, the latter shall take precedence.

This classification is based on SI units.

The practice described applies to textile and flexible plastic parts and materials used in automotive vehicles. Special care should be taken when high pile carpet samples are being evaluated.

The practice applies to parts and materials used in vehicle manufacture which are intended to be acceptable color matches to a specified color standard. This practice is intended for use with parts or materials that are opaque or nearly so and does not apply to transparent materials. Materials covered by this practice include topcoat paint finishes, interior soft trim, interior and exterior hard trim, and exterior film.
