Published By Publication Date Number of Pages
NACE 2015-01-28 20
]]>
This standard provides a procedure that shall be used to (1) assess structures for atmospheric corrosion; (2) assess the level of risk to the structure in terms of corrosion attack and degradation to the existing coating system; (3) make informed decisions based on those findings as to whether coating repair is needed, and if so, to what extent; and (4) apply repair coatings to the structure if applicable. This standard applies to the repair of above-grade atmospheric coatings. For the purposes of this standard, the atmospheric area to be coated generally comprises of that portion of the utility support structure above the transition zone, which is that portion of the coating exposed up to 600 mm (24 in) above grade.

This standard is limited to the above-grade and atmospheric portions of utility support structures. It does not address below-grade coating repair within and below the transition zone. This standard does not address foundations or guy anchoring systems. This standard does not cover the coating of aluminum, weathering steel, concrete, or any material other than steel. Likewise, it does not cover the coating of nonsupport structures such as fencing, buildings, transformers, or other miscellaneous components within the transmission, distribution, and substation systems. This standard does not cover new construction, transition zone, below-grade, or water immersion. These areas of concern are addressed specifically in other NACE/IEEE standards. This standard does not address mechanical or structural damage, mechanical or structural repairs, or structural integrity.

The free alcohol is reacted with vanadium(V) sodium salt of quinolin-8-ol(8-hydroxyquinoline) to form a coloured complex. The complex is extracted with toluene and then treated with dichloroacetic acid. The spectrometric measurement is carried out at a wavelength of about 620 nm. The method is applicable to products having free alcohol contents between 0,01 and 5,0 % (m/m).

The method is applicable to simple and mixed alcohol esters that are liquid at ambient temperature. The following principle is specified: Saponification of the ester using potassium hydroxide in ethanolic solution followed by titration with standard volumetric hydrochloric acid solution in the presence of phenolphthalein as indicator. In the case of mixed alcohol esters the relative molar mass of which can only be estimated the saponification and ester values are used to express the result.

The method specified determines only those phenols capable of reacting at the 2nd, 4th and 6th position (-OH = 1). The procedure consists in extraction of free phenols from a test portion with sodium hydroxide solution. Bromination of these phenols with potassium bromide-bromate solution in an acid medium and determination of the excess bromine after reaction with potassium iodide by titration with standard volumetric sodium thiosulphate solution.
