TAPPI TIP 0304-61 attempts to provide a basic understanding of the role that copper plays in a printing ink, its use and its control. Copper is a concern to many box makers since its presence in plant effluents is often monitored by local sewage authorities. Therefore, caution should be exercised as the copper discharge limits in certain municipalities are extremely low. In some cases, these limits are less than 0.0001% (1.0 ppm).

The objective of this Technical Information Paper is to list several important quality parameters of a printing ink. The list represents many physical, chemical and performance properties for flexographic printing inks.

The intent is to establish a comprehensive list of quality characteristics which can be discussed with individual ink suppliers to help establish performance requirements for a box plant.

The list provides a starting point for communication between ink users and suppliers so that critical ink properties can be identified for a given application. Once identified, quality specifications can be mutually developed.

This document describes a laboratory test method, using an IGT1-type or a prüfbau2-type printability tester, for the preparation of specimens to evaluate the absorption rate of an ink on a substrate in offset lithography by setting-off the printed surface to an unprinted surface.

This method describes testing with an amount of ink simulating either single colour or multi-colour printing. The print and the set-off print (counter print) are made with interval times, between print and set-off, common for the target process.

This method evaluates a particular ink and substrate combination.
