IWA 9:2011 can also be used to compare or assess the performance of business districts regarding the provisions described within it.

IWA 9:2011 does not set benchmarks or expected levels of performance regarding the impacts of business districts.

IWA 9:2011 is intended to be used in conjunction with, and in accordance with the principles set out in, ISO 15392, ISO 26000 and the standards on environmental management prepared by ISO/TC 207.

This document provides a basic step-by-step approach for achieving non-residential (net) zero-energy buildings (ZEBs). It also describes the basic concept of ZEBs and the items for consideration in this approach.

The following are within the scope of this document:

—    application to non-residential buildings;

—    annual energy consumption of a ZEB (this includes the operating consumption of the building and excludes the energy consumed by the manufacturing of materials and equipment, and the energy consumed during construction);

—    renewable energy supply (this can be on-site or off-site, depending on the policy and conditions of the country in which the supply is installed);

—    application to any climate zone.

The following are out of the scope of this document:

—    recommendations or suggestions for the adoption of any specific technologies and/or equipment and materials that are expected to be continuously innovated (however it does stipulate the technologies for selection);

—    specific methods or calculation formulae;

—    commissioning methods.

The object of consideration in ISO/TS 21929-2:2015 is a civil engineering works, a part of the civil engineering works or a combination of several civil engineering works.

The aim of this part of ISO/TS 21929-1:2006 is to define the process that shall be followed when addressing the economic, environmental and social impacts of a building using a common framework and a set of indicators. This part of ISO/TS 21929-1:2006:

• adapts general sustainability principles for buildings;
• includes a framework for the assessment of economic, environmental and social impacts of buildings;
• shows indicators as examples;
• shows how to use sustainability indicators with regard to buildings and shows the process of using sustainability indicators;
• supports the process of choosing indicators;
• supports the development of assessment tools;
• defines the conformity with this specification.
