The smoking of cigarettes and the collection of mainstream smoke are normally carried out in accordance with <span class=\"std\"><span class=\"std-ref\">ISO&nbsp;4387<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"non-normative-note\">\n<div class=\"note-label\">\n  NOTE&nbsp;1\n <\/div>\n<p><span class=\"std\"><span class=\"std-ref\">ISO&nbsp;20778<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"std\"><span class=\"std-ref\">ISO&nbsp;22253<\/span><\/span> provide the determination method of nicotine in smoke with an intense smoking regime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"non-normative-note\">\n<div class=\"note-label\">\n  NOTE&nbsp;2\n <\/div>\n<p>In countries not in a position to use the gas-chromatographic method, reference is made to <span class=\"std\"><span class=\"std-ref\">ISO&nbsp;3400<\/span><\/span> for the determination of total nicotine alkaloids.
