CSA Preface<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the second edition of CAN\/CSA-ISO 22559-1, Safety requirements for lifts (elevators) \u2014 Part 1: Global essential safety requirements (GESRs)<\/em>, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 22559-1 (first edition, 2014-02-15). It supersedes the previous edition published in 2007 as CAN\/CSA-ISO\/TS 22559-1 (adopted ISO\/TS 22559-1:2004). For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as CAN\/CSA-ISO 22559-1 throughout.<\/p>\n

Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This part of ISO 22559<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 specifies GESRs for lifts (elevators), their components and functions, and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 establishes a system and provides methods for minimizing safety risks that may arise in the course of, the operation and use of, or work on, lifts (elevators).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

NOTE 1 Hereinafter in this part of ISO 22559, the term lift is used instead of the term elevator.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

NOTE 2 See Clause 5 regarding the use and application of this part of ISO 22559.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This part of ISO 22559 is applicable to lifts that are intended to carry persons or persons and goods that can<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

a) be located in any permanent and fixed structure or building, except lifts located in means of transport, (e.g. ships);<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

b) have any<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1) rated load, size of load carrying unit and speed, and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2) travel distance and number of landings;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

c) be affected by fire in the load-carrying unit (LCU), earthquake, weather, or flood;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

d) be foreseeably misused (e.g. overloaded) but not vandalized.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This part of ISO 22559 does not cover<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

a) all needs of users with disabilities1), or<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

b) risks arising from<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1) work on lifts under construction, testing, or during alterations and dismantling<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2) use of lifts for fire fighting and emergency evacuation<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

3) vandalism, and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
