This Item presents<br \/>\nan analysis of the four-bar chain mechanism, which includes<br \/>\nderivation of:<\/p>\n<p>the coupler and rocker angles in terms of the link lengths,<\/p>\n<p>errors in the link angles due to changes in the link lengths<br \/>\nfrom their nominal values<\/p>\n<p>and position errors of the offsets from the coupler and<br \/>\nrocker.<\/p>\n<p>Many applications require careful control of the magnitude of<br \/>\ntolerance that is allowable in order that the performance of a<br \/>\nlinkage is not degraded. The four-bar chain is possibly the most<br \/>\ncommonly-used linkage because of the diversity of outputs that can<br \/>\nbe generated by suitable sizing of links.<\/p>\n<p>An example of a simple four-bar crank-rocker linkage illustrates<br \/>\nthe analysis process, together with the error in the coupler and<br \/>\nrocker angles resulting from small changes in the link lengths. The<br \/>\nerror in the position of the coupler point from small changes in<br \/>\nthe link lengths only is also shown. A second example illustrates<br \/>\nthe steering linkage of a vehicle, known as the Ackermann linkage,<br \/>\nwhich is driven by the action of a four-bar linkage.<\/p>\n<p>In an Appendix the equations of kinematic constraint are<br \/>\nderived.
