The oscillating wake induces a substantial base<br \/>\ndrag, a prediction method for which is given in Appendix B of ESDU<br \/>\n10016. For aircraft, and in many other applications, it is<br \/>\nimportant to maintain low drag and so various means have been<br \/>\ntested whereby the periodicity is controlled \u2013 either eliminated or<br \/>\nmoderated.<\/p>\n<p>ESDU 10017 describes the devices used and provides guidance on<br \/>\ntheir effectiveness in the reduction of base drag at subsonic and<br \/>\nlow supersonic speeds. The four classes of trailing-edge device<br \/>\nthat have been tested, i.e. base bleed, splitter plates, cavities<br \/>\nand non-linear trailing edges, are discussed with particular<br \/>\nreference to base drag alleviation and any other useful aerodynamic<br \/>\naspects.
