ESDU 70011 is then used to estimate the<br \/>\nlift-curve slope for that effective aspect ratio. Wind-tunnel data<br \/>\ndrawn from the literature for a wide range of configurations were<br \/>\nused to correlate the effective aspect ratio (determined using ESDU<br \/>\n70011) as a function of the ratio fin height\/tailplane span and fin<br \/>\nspanwise position. The data were correlated to within 5 per cent<br \/>\nand apply to straight-tapered tailplanes of taper ratio (tip<br \/>\nchord\/centreline chord) between 1 and 0.4 and mid-chord sweep up to<br \/>\n45 degrees, for any fin planform, and are independent of fin<br \/>\nvertical location on the tailplane. The method is restricted to<br \/>\nattached flow at subcritical speeds. The ranges of geometries for<br \/>\nthe test data used in the correlation are tabulated, sketches show<br \/>\nplots comparing predicted with experimental results, and a worked<br \/>\nexample illustrates the use of the method.
