This document is applicable to the basic safety<\/i> and essential performance<\/i> of oxygen conserving equipment<\/i>, hereafter referred to as ME equipment,<\/i> in combination with its accessories <\/i>intended to conserve supplemental oxygen by delivering gas intermittently and synchronized with the patient's <\/i>inspiratory cycle, when used in the home healthcare environment<\/i>. Oxygen conserving equipment<\/i> is typically used by a lay operator<\/i>. <\/p>\n
NOTE 1 Conserving equipment<\/i> can also be used in professional health care facilities.<\/i><\/p>\n
This document is also applicable to conserving equipment<\/i> that is incorporated with other equipment. <\/p>\n
EXAMPLE Conserving equipment<\/i> combined with a pressure regulator[2]<\/sup>, an oxygen concentrator[7]<\/sup> or liquid oxygen equipment[4]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n This document is also applicable to those accessories<\/i> intended by their manufacturer<\/i> to be connected to conserving equipment<\/i>, where the characteristics of those accessories<\/i> can affect the basic safety<\/i> or essential performance<\/i> of the conserving equipment<\/i>. <\/p>\n This document is intended to clarify the difference in operation of various conserving equipment<\/i> models, as well as between the operation of conserving equipment <\/i>and continuous flow oxygen equipment, by requiring standardized performance testing and labelling.<\/p>\n This document is only applicable to active devices (e.g. pneumatically or electrically powered) and is not applicable to non-active devices (e.g. reservoir cannulas). <\/p>\n If a clause or subclause is specifically intended to be applicable to ME equipment<\/i> only, or to ME systems<\/i> only, the title and content of that clause or subclause will say so.
