This Standard specifies the requirements for a uniform
\ntelecommunications grounding and bonding
\ninfrastructure that shall be followed within commercial buildings
\nwhere telecommunications
\nequipment will be installed.<\/p>\n
This Standard specifies a telecommunications grounding and bonding
\ninfrastructure and its
\ninterconnection to other building systems.<\/p>\n
Figure 2.1-1 depicts the scope of the telecommunications grounding and
\nbonding infrastructure for
\nlarger, multi-story commercial buildings with multiple
\ntelecommunications backbones. Figure 2.1-2
\ndepicts a smaller commercial building where telecommunications spaces
\nare combined. This Standard
\nspecifies the requirements for:<\/p>\n
– A ground (earth) reference for telecommunications systems within the
\ntelecommunications entrance
\nfacility, the telecommunications room, and equipment room;<\/p>\n
– Bonding of metallic pathways, cable shields, conductors, and
\nhardware at telecommunications
\nrooms, equipment rooms, and entrance facilities.<\/p>\n
This Standard is intended to encourage planning, which should include
\ngrounding and bonding
\narrangements to accommodate telecommunications equipment installation.<\/p>\n
While primarily intended to provide direction for design of new
\ncommercial buildings, this Standard
\nmay be used as a guide for the renovation or retrofit of existing
\nbuildings.<\/p>\n
Design requirements and choices are described to enable the designer
\nto make informed design
\ndecisions.<\/p>\n
Exclusions from this Standard<\/p>\n
This Standard does not provide requirements for:<\/p>\n
a) Specific grounding and bonding of any telecommunications equipment
\nand associated wiring;<\/p>\n
b) Values of surge current immunity and insulation withstand voltages;<\/p>\n
c) Methods for verifying and maintaining grounding and bonding
\nnetworks;<\/p>\n
d) Specific methods for RFI\/EMI mitigation for equipment or systems;<\/p>\n
e) Primary protector\/arrester specifications, applications and
\ninstallation;<\/p>\n
f) Secondary protector specifications and applications;<\/p>\n
g) Specific user safety;<\/p>\n
h) Grounding and bonding practices of the local telecommunications
\nutilities;<\/p>\n
i) Electrical service entrance;<\/p>\n
j) Grounding of ac surge protection devices;<\/p>\n
