\nsignals employing startstop (Le., asynchronous) format at a data
\nterminal equipment interface. The scope of this standard is limited
\nto signals as defined in TIA Standards TINEIA-422-B Electrical
\nCharacteristics of Balanced Voltage Digital Interface
\nCircuits<\/i>, TINEIA-423-B Electrical Characteristics of
\nUnbalanced Voltage Digital Interface Circuits, EIA-485 Standard for
\nElectrical Characteristics of Generators and Receivers for Use in
\nBalanced Digital Multipoint Systems<\/i>, ElMIA-562 Electrical
\nCharacteristics for An Unbalanced Digital Interface and the
\nelectrical characteristic portion of EICVTIA-232-E Interface
\nBetween Data Terminal Equipment and Data Communication Equipment
\nEmploying Serial Binary Data Interchange<\/i>.<\/p>\n

This Standard recognizes the need to have a number of different
\nsets of standard performance requirements because of differing
\noperating conditions that lead to a different way of implementing
\nequipment. A number of performance characteristics, therefore, are
\ndefined for transmitting equipment and for receiving equipment, it
\nbeing the intent that any receiving category may be specified to
\noperate with any transmitting category, the actual selection being
\ndependent on such factors as channel performance, acceptable error
\nrate, and the economic considerations of the system.<\/p>\n
Categories I and B, as defined herein, are specified for general
\npurpose applications and the use thereof shall be assumed unless a
\ndifferent category is specified for the equipment used.<\/p>\n
This Standard is of particular importance when the equipment in
\na system is furnished by different organizations. It does not
\nattempt to indicate what action, if any, is to be taken if the
\nlimits are not met, but it is intended to provide a basis for
\nagreement between parties involved.<\/p>\n
Any equipment which is represented as complying with limits
\nestablished by this Standard shall meet the applicable
\nspecifications with the ranges of those factors which are described
\nas appropriate for the operation of the equipment, such as primary
\npower voltage and frequency, ambient temperature and
\nhumidity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This Standard does not describe signal quality performance
\ncharacteristics of data circuit-terminating equipment or the
\ncommunications channel associated with it. Neither does it describe
\nany requirement for error performance of the system or any of its
\ncomponents. Compliance of the terminais with the requirements for a
\nparticular standard signal quality performance category should not
\nbe construed as establishing an acceptable error rate for the
