It is used to measure the total range of<br \/>\ninsertion loss, a, due to changes in polarization of the launch<br \/>\nstate. This procedure can also be used to measure the polarization<br \/>\ndependence of isolated ports. For branching devices, it can also be<br \/>\nused to measure the total range of coupling ratio, cr (i). It<br \/>\ncannot be used to measure polarization maintaining components or to<br \/>\nmeasure the polarization dependence of return loss.<\/p>\n<p>Two methods for measuring the polarization dependence are<br \/>\ndescribed. Method A will determine the maximum polarization<br \/>\nsensitivity over all possible polarization states including linear,<br \/>\ncircular and elliptical. Method B will determine the maximum<br \/>\npolarization sensitivity over all linearly polarized launch states.<br \/>\nMethod A is preferred, particularly for any device in which the<br \/>\npolarization state of light passing through the device is<br \/>\nrecommended to ensure that it is adequate for a particular<br \/>\ncomponent. Method B will generally understate the polarization<br \/>\nsensitivity of devices which are not dependent on linearly<br \/>\npolarized light.
