The process of<br \/>\nfatigue crack growth is described and the means of limiting it<br \/>\nexplained. The effect of local stresses is indicated together with<br \/>\nseveral examples on improvement of fatigue strength by reduction of<br \/>\nstress concentrations. The effect of component surface treatments<br \/>\nis summarised and guidance is given on the selective fatigue<br \/>\nstrengths of various common engineering materials.
