Three-dimensional<br \/>\neffects and wind inclination to the ridge line can be taken into<br \/>\naccount. Interference effects from other nearby topography can be<br \/>\nassessed, and guidance is provided for the effects of flow<br \/>\nseparation on steep topography. Two methods are given: a simple<br \/>\ngraphical approach that is accurate for simple embankments but is<br \/>\nless accurate for rounded hills because it only accounts for the<br \/>\noverall shape, and a more precise method that accounts for the<br \/>\ndetailed shape of the hill. Irregularly-shaped hills with bulges<br \/>\nand depressions, and multiple hills, are treated by the method of<br \/>\nsuperposition, that is, each irregularity is treated as a separate<br \/>\nisolated hill or valley and the contribution to speed-up added to<br \/>\nthe other contributions for an overall solution. The methods were<br \/>\nderived from data obtained using solutions of the Navier-Stokes<br \/>\nequations, calibrated against both full-scale and wind-tunnel<br \/>\nmeasurements.
