The Proceedings of the International Conference on The Metallurgy, Welding, and Qualification of Microalloyed (HSLA) Steel Weldments, held November 6-8, 1990, in Houston, Texas, contains original, technical papers by internationally-regarded metallurgists and welding engineers. The subject matter ranges from the metallurgy and steel making and rolling practices of microalloyed steels to the welded fabrication of ships and offshore structures from these versatile materials. The outstanding notch and fracture toughnesses, coupled with excellent weldability of these microalloyed steels, have accounted for the surge in their use for an ever-increasing range of applications.

The technical reputations of the speakers and their conscientiousness in preparing comprehensive manuscripts plus the timeliness of the subjects covered make this conference a worthy continuation of a series of conferences and seminars that have been presented since the milestone conference, "Microalloying 75" (October, 1975, Washington, D.C.) A wealth of technical data on this class of steels has been developed since this initial conference. Now, microalloyed steels have emerged and been adopted for a wide variety of applications. Unquestionably, this trend will continue. This 1990 conference established a new baseline from which to measure continued growth in technology for joining and for application of microalloyed steels.

Papers included:

  • Influences of Steel Composition and Welding Procedure on the HAZ Toughness of Thick-Section Structural Steels By P. L. Harrison, P. H. M. Hart
  • Heat Affected Zone Properties of Thick Section Microalloyed Steels-A Perspective By F. Heisterkamp, K. Hulka, and A. D. Batte
  • Experience in Fabricating New Types of Offshore Plate and Linepipe By P. Tuvnes and I. Harneshaug
  • Influence of Local Brittle Zone on HAZ Toughness of TMCP Steels By S. Aihara and K. Okamoto
