This report contains a proposed fitness-for-service procedure that is applicable to pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks in refinery and chemical service. The methodology includes consideration of the following:
- Determination of the cause of the flaw(s)
- Methodology of inspection and inspection planning.
- Assessment of crack -like flaws
- Non-growing cracks
- Time-dependent crack growth
- Assessment of volumetric flaws
- Locally thinned areas
- Blend-ground areas
- Blisters
Seven appendices at the end of the report provide background information on the recommended procedures, as well as reference material on fracture toughness, stress intensity factors, limit load solutions, environmental cracking mechanisms, and nondestructive evaluation.
Lastly, several recommendations on areas of future study, which are aimed at improving the existing fitness-for-service methodology are provided.
The procedures and equations in this document are consistent with Version 2.1 of the PREFIS software.
