In this<br \/>\ncontext, land areas generally refers to environmental media such as<br \/>\nsoils, surface and ground water, and vegetation; structures<br \/>\ntypically refers to building construction materials. It is expected<br \/>\nthat when the ultimate objective of decommissioning is site<br \/>\nrelease, characterization and final status survey design should be<br \/>\ncoordinated. Therefore, users of the MARSSIM or other final status<br \/>\nsurvey protocols can use this standard for its technical approach<br \/>\nto designing a characterization survey for a specific<br \/>\nobjective.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of this standard is geared toward radiological<br \/>\ncharacterization. However, if nonradiological contaminants (e.g.,<br \/>\nasbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, mercury, arsenic)<br \/>\nare potentially present, it is beneficial to integrate radiological<br \/>\nand non-radiological characterization activities. A useful<br \/>\nreference for non-radiological characterization activities is ASTM<br \/>\nE 1527-05.<\/p>\n<p>It is outside the scope of this standard to discuss all of the<br \/>\ninstruments, tools, and procedures currently available to support<br \/>\ncharacterization activities. This standard does not apply to the<br \/>\nrelease of materials and equipment. Similarly, it is outside the<br \/>\nscope to address emerging characterization technologies. Rather,<br \/>\nthis standard endorses any and all instruments, tools, and<br \/>\nprocedures that effectively achieve the particular characterization<br \/>\nobjective.
