Elastic Stress Concentration Factors. Geometric Discontinuities in Flat Bars or Strips of Isotropic Material

ESDU 09014 presents data on stress concentrations that occur in
flat bars of strips when they are loaded in tension or bending. The
various geometries for which data are presented include strips
containing central or off-set circular holes, elliptical holes,
slots, U-shaped edge notches (either a single notch in one side or
opposed notches), flat-bottomed opposed notches and fillets at
changes in the strip width. For each geometry, the cross-section on
which the reference stress is based is given. The data apply only
to isotropic materials that obey Hooke's Law. Closed-form equations
for the calculation of stress concentrations that occur around
centrally placed holes or variously shaped notches and fillets that
lie within specific bounds are presented.
