INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

This Data Item provides a method for representing \u2013 and, if
\nnecessary, relating \u2013 the braking performances of aircraft and
\nground-test machines in wet conditions. The method is essentially
\nstatistical and implies that there is a clearly-defined level of
\nprobability that can be deduced from test runs of an aircraft (or
\nground-test machine) in a given set of wetness conditions on a
\nparticular runway. If the runway macro-texture depth is known, then
\nthe parameter that defines the variation of effective coefficient
\nof braking friction in the given conditions can be readily
\ncalculated from a pre-determined Friction Data Base.<\/i><\/p>\n

Section 3<\/strong> defines the model used to represent
\nwet runway braking friction. Section 4<\/strong> describes
\nprocedures for generating a Friction Data Base for aircraft and
\nground-test machines and introduces examples based in existing test
\ndata. Section 5 discusses several ways in which Friction Data Bases
\ncan be used. Within the context of this Data Item the primary uses
\nare,<\/p>\n

to represent measured aircraft braking performance data on a
\nstatistical basis,<\/p>\n

to provide means of relating<\/i> the braking performances
\nof ground-test machines and aircraft.<\/p>\n

Section 6<\/strong> addresses the possibilities of
\ninterpreting existing Friction Data Bases for use elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Section 7<\/strong> reviews the limitations of the method
\nand various aspects of its implementation.<\/p>\n

If the method is to be used to relate<\/i> the braking
\nperformances of a given combination of aircraft and ground-test
\nmachine, the procedure comprises two distinct phases. The first is
\nthe establishment of separate Friction Data Bases<\/i> for the
\naircraft and for the ground-test machine. The second is the
\nprediction of operational braking performance of the aircraft from
\nday-to-day measurements from the ground-test machine.<\/p>\n

ESDU 99016 and ESDU 99017 (References 7 and 8) provide two
\nexamples of the derivation of Friction Data Bases for individual
\naircraft. The former of these considers an aircraft for which an
\nextensive set of test data is available; the latter considers an
\naircraft for which a limited set of test data is available.
\nReference 9 provides a detailed example for a ground-test
\nmachine.<\/p>\n

\nwith significant depths of water, slush, snow or ice. Reference 3
