This part of IEC 60793 establishes uniform requirements for
\nmeasuring the mode field diameter (MFD) of optical fibre, thereby
\nassisting in the inspection of fibres and cables for commercial
\npurposes.<\/p>\n
The MFD represents a measure of the transverse extent of the
\nelectromagnetic field intensity of the mode in a fibre cross
\nsection, and it is defined from the far-field intensity
\ndistribution as a ratio of integrals known as the Petermann II
\ndefinition. See equation (1).<\/p>\n
The definitions of MFD are strictly related to the measurement
\nconfigurations. The mathematical equivalence of these definitions
\nresults from transform relationships between measurement results
\nobtained by different implementations summarized in figure 1 as
\nfollows:<\/p>\n
Four methods are described for measuring MFD:<\/p>\n
\u2013 method A: direct far-field scan;<\/p>\n
\u2013 method B: variable aperture in the far field;<\/p>\n
\u2013 method C: near-field scan;<\/p>\n
\u2013 method D: bi-directional backscatter using an optical time
\ndomain reflectometer (OTDR).<\/p>\n
All four methods apply to all categories of type B single-mode
\nfibre shown in IEC 60793- 2 and operating near 1 310 nm or 1 550
\nnm. Method D is not recommended for the measurement of fibres of
\nunknown type or design.<\/p>\n
Information common to all four methods is contained in clauses 1
\nto 8, and information pertaining to each individual method appears
