Such superlaminar conditions can<br \/>\narise at high surface speed or if the lubricant is of very low<br \/>\nviscosity.<\/p>\n<p>The flow regime is largely determined by the Reynolds number but<br \/>\nthe onset of turbulence does not occur at a precisely predictable<br \/>\nvalue of the Reynolds number and the transition is likely to<br \/>\nfeature a regular vortex pattern before random turbulence is<br \/>\nencountered.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of vortices and\/or turbulence results in increased<br \/>\npower loss and, generally, higher operating temperature than that<br \/>\npredicted by laminar flow theory.
